Course Description

Moving Your Organization Forward

This leadership development program exposes leaders to the challenges and techniques for managing an organization as it moves through various phases of development.  Modules consist of lectures, table top exercises, cross sector panel discussions, and a key note speaker. Local and national experts in law enforcement, corporate security, and academic researchers will jointly lead class discussions. The last half-day provides participants with environmental scans assessing the impact of politics, technology and social change on the organizational landscape.  The program, delivered over a three and half day period, provides 40 hours of training. Discussion areas include:

  • Qualities and Attributes of Effective/Ineffective Leaders and How to Match One’s Own Leadership Style with Stages of Organizational Growth
  • Crisis Management: How Leaders Can Effectively Use Technology and Social Media
  • Diagnosing and Correcting Organizational Dysfunction: Changing What Needs to be Changed
  • The Political, Technical and Social Climate Faced by Today’s Leaders

Readings may be assigned between sessions to prepare participants for the next workshop session.

Course Outline

Day 1: The Creation

  • Lectures:
    • Qualities and Attributes of Effective/Ineffective Leaders and Assessing One’s Own Leadership Style;
    • Matching Style with Life Cycle Theory and Organizational Culture
  • Table Top Exercises:
    • Creating a Successful Vision/Mission Statement;
    • Creating a Successful Team            
  • Panel Discussion:
    • Inter-sector leaders (public, military, private) present and discuss mini case studies of their own experience with creating a new organization
  • Key Note Dinner Speaker
  • After Dinner Questions and Discussion

Day 2: Growing and Maintaining

  • Lectures:
    • Establishing a Creative Bureaucracy;
    • Communicating Internally and Externally – The Creative Use of All Media Platforms
  • Table Top Exercises:
    • Strategic Thinking – Developing the Plan;
    • Creating a Successful Media Presence       
  • Panel Discussion:
    • Inter-sector leaders present and discuss mini case studies of their own experience with media.
  • Key Note Dinner Speaker
  • After Dinner Questions and Discussion

Day 3: Renewing

  • Film on Organizational Dysfunction
  • Lecture on Change Management
  • Table Top Exercise:
    • Introducing, establishing and managing change in a mature organization 
  • Panel Discussion:
    • Inter-sector leaders present and discuss mini case studies of their own experience with change management
  • Key Note Dinner Speaker
  • After Dinner Questions and Discussion

Day 4: The Political, Technical and Social Climate Faced by Today's Leaders

  • Lecture
    • St. Louis Fusion Center- Terrorism Early Warning Group: Public/Private Cross Organization Collaboration
  • Recap of Program Takeaways 

Additional Information

A few reminders about this program:

  • In order to receive a Certificate of Completion, you must attend all 3.5 days of the program.  
  • Class times:
    • 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
    • 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon on Friday
  • Meals:
    • Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided Tuesday through Thursday.
    • Breakfast provided on Friday.
    • Dinner and Evening Speaker Series from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday
  • Participants will earn a Saint Louis University Certificate in: Law Enforcement and Corporate Security Leadership
  • Missouri POST Commission Credits will be awarded through the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Academy.
