Course Description

This course introduces modern techniques that are used to study the Earth’s shape, rotation, and gravitational field focusing on satellite-based measurements. Specific topics include satellite orbit perturbations due to the gravity field, satellite tracking systems, geodetic systems, datums and coordinate systems, Earth rotation and reference frames, ocean and solid Earth tides, and gravity field representations.

  • Satellite Altimetry
  • Geodesy Using Interferometric SAR
  • Photogrammetry for Geodesy

Learner Outcomes

  • Be familiar with the fundamentals of space geodesy and gravity
  • Be able to interpret gravity anomalies and Earth models
  • Be able to use satellite systems to model Earth measurements
  • Be able to use satellite altimetry, InSAR, GPS data for geodetic surveying
  • Understand satellite geodesy algorithms, operations, products, and standards

Prerequisites

GEO5040 - Introduction to Remote Sensing or equivalent experience.
