Course Description

This course introduces students to core concepts in Geographic Information Systems, location science, and spatial thinking. Students get experience using Geographic Information Systems software to make maps, manage data, perform analyses, and communicate visually.

Learner Outcomes

Through completion of this course students should:
  • Learn core concepts in GIS, remote sensing, spatial data, coordinates, and cartography
  • Demonstrate the ability to collect/retrieve, manage, and share spatial data
  • Gain the ability to perform low-level spatial analyses and communicate results
  • Demonstrate an understanding of spatial coordinates, datums, and projections
  • Demonstrate independent thought and learning by completing an original mapping project
